Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center

Salas O’Brien provided comprehensive design services for the Northern Nevada Sierra Medical Center. The hospital was constructed on a greenfield site in just two and a half years. To achieve the hospital’s commitment to sustainable and resilient infrastructure, we designed a 1,400-ton magnetic bearing centrifugal chiller plant, a waterside economizer, free cooling, and an infinitely variable chilled water plant optimization algorithm.

In addition, we incorporated several energy-saving features, such as 200 tons of exhaust air cooling energy recovery and high-efficiency fixtures that reduce domestic water use by 35 percent, saving over 2.35 million gallons of water per year. We also designed outdoor air flush operations to mitigate the spread of infectious diseases and ensure the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and visitors.

With high initial demand and planned expansion, the medical center is well-prepared to meet healthcare needs now and in the future.
