Nova Southeastern University Hospital

When HCA opened Florida University Hospital at Nova Southeastern University, training and research opportunities for two campus medical schools increased significantly. Salas O’Brien provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and low-voltage design, including 4 MW of emergency power generation and on-site fuel oil storage.

Our team designed a remote Central Energy Plant that supplies chilled and hot water, uses high-efficiency boilers for heat generation. The design offers about 2,800 tons of cooling, incorporating high-efficiency magnetic levitating chillers, a heat recovery chiller, and a backup cooling plan during emergency power mode. A state-of-the-art building automation system monitors and controls the hospital’s HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems. Our energy-efficient design supports the demands of the hospital, including classrooms, smart TVs in every room, a Level III neonatal intensive care unit, and advanced operating room equipment. Designed for future expansion, the hospital can grow to 600 beds across ten stories, making its energy-efficient systems even more crucial in the long term.
