Concourse system upgrade without interrupting operations
Dulles, VA, USA
Airport Substation and MEP Term Contract
Salas O’Brien partnered with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) to upgrade the electrical system at Dulles Airport’s Concourse C/D, a project that required zero downtime during operation. We achieved this goal by rehabilitating conduits in existing duct banks and replacing two 15kV feeders. Additionally, we changed out medium voltage substations A1A and A1B to fulfill code requirements. Further upgrades included the replacement of 33 panelboards and four motor control centers to power jet bridges, as well as the installation of 30 electric vehicle charging stations in a parking garage and a photovoltaic and battery storage system at a maintenance facility – all of which helped MWAA meet its sustainability goals. Despite the limited time for completion, the projects were successful – we completed the tasks quickly with little disruption to airport operations. The result is an improved, fully functioning electrical system that serves Dulles Airport’s Concourse C/D as they strive toward its sustainability goals.
