Substation Design

A certified retail electricity and natural gas supplier wanted to expand their substation site. As a result, Salas O’Brien designed a more robust steel high-voltage structure to support increased electrical capacity. In addition, we updated the H-frame dual circuit 34.5kV substation to a custom double box bay 69kV station. We re-used and expanded an existing structure using custom steel to include four possible incoming circuit locations. Changing the type of steel structure added the ability to double the potential load capacity of the substation; now, the station has twice as many transmission lines. The double box bay steel structure also allows upgraded equipment to handle higher voltage ratings and clearances. Our client can now load shed and sectionalize transmission at this substation, preventing their end customers from losing power when maintenance is needed.
