The nation’s first net zero energy Walgreens
Evanston, IL, USA
Net Zero Energy Store
Salas O’Brien worked closely with all team members to develop an approach for achieving the sustainability goals of LEED Platinum, GBI Green Globes, and Living Building Challenge Zero Energy (ZE) building certifications, analyzing, designing, and constructing the nationwide pharmacy chain’s flagship Zero Energy Building.
The project’s numerous sustainable systems and technologies include a closed-loop geothermal heating and cooling system, demand and natural ventilation systems and controls, CO2 “natural” refrigeration systems for both building and process cooling, high efficiency LED lighting and daylight controls, and a roof-top 800-panel photovoltaic system. The project has been recognized with many awards in engineering and design, most recently the International ASHRAE Technology Award for Commercial Buildings.
