In the face of evolving energy codes, the role of air barriers in enhancing building airtightness is more crucial than ever. These barriers not only reduce the workload on heating and cooling systems, leading to lower energy consumption, but are also a key component in modern energy standards like ASHRAE 90.1 and the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). Stephen Shanks presents on the changing landscape of energy codes and demonstrates how professionals in architecture, engineering, and construction can utilize air barriers for improved energy efficiency and code compliance.

Stephen Shanks, CxA, BECxP, NDT Level III, brings over 40 years of experience as a building scientist and commissioning provider. His unique expertise in both physics and building construction allows him to seamlessly integrate theoretical and practical knowledge. As a recognized expert in Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx), Air Barriers, Whole Building Airtightness Testing (WBAT), and Thermal-Infrared (IR) Examinations, Stephen plays a vital role in various industry standards and code development committees, including ASHRAE Technical Committees 4.4 and 7.9, and ASTM Committee E06. He currently serves as a Vice President at Salas O’Brien.
