Parakeet Adventure at Zoo Atlanta

Zoo Atlanta’s Boundless Budgies: A Parakeet Adventure is an interactive children’s exhibit that allows zoo visitors to immerse themselves in the aviary habitat of over 3,000 Australian Parakeets. Salas O’Brien designed the 3,155-square-foot exhibit, which gives zoo-goers the unique opportunity to purchase seed sticks in the project’s entry pavilion and proceed to feed the parakeets in the main aviary space.

The aviary habitat costs $750,000 and is made of sturdy and easy-to-clean materials. It features a sculpted concrete slab with a running artificial waterfall and stream. Ensuring the safety and hygiene of visitors was a top priority for our team during the project. The site also includes a bird-holding building at the rear of the aviary that is the home of the parakeets when they are off exhibit. In addition, our team designed this building for the expansion of other birds, including flightless species, at a later date.
