Jeff Urlaub, PE from Salas O’Brien, recently teamed up with Blake Ellis to conduct a seminar at the 2023 ASHRAE Winter Conference held at the Georgia World Congress Center. Their session was a key part of the conference’s technical program.

This seminar focused on the role of ground source heat pumps (GSHP) in decarbonizing campus environments. It tackled the challenges posed by limited space and existing underground infrastructure, which can hinder the heating and cooling capacity. Additionally, the session delved into how integrating GSHP with thermal energy storage can reduce the need for extensive geo-exchange loops and potentially facilitate seasonal storage.

As a principal at Salas O’Brien, Jeff Urlaub brings a wealth of experience in campus electrification master planning. His expertise has been instrumental in the design of over 150 geothermal projects, showcasing his deep knowledge in sustainable campus energy solutions.

Combinations of systems and strategies enable district-scale electrification. Geo-exchange with thermal storage is highly effective and allows a great range of ground loop system sizes.
