Stephen Shanks is a building scientist and commissioning provider with over 40 years of experience studying the performance of structures. He specializes in Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx), Air Barriers, and Whole Building Airtightness Testing (WBAT).
With his background in physics and building construction, he combines theory and practice in a unique and integrated way. Mr. Shanks provides consulting services on new and existing construction, building enclosures, historic restoration and preservation, construction failures, and as an expert witness.
He currently serves as Chair of the Executive Committee for the Building Enclosure Technology and Environment Council (BETEC) of the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) and Co-Chair of the Codes Task Group for the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA).
He is active with industry standard and code development activities, including ASHRAE Technical Committees 7.9 Building Commissioning, 4.4 Building Materials and Building Envelope Performance, and 1.12 Moisture Management in Buildings. He is also active with ASTM Committee E58 on Forensic Engineering and Committee E06 on Performance of Building, including Subcommittees E06.41 on Air Leakage and Ventilation Performance and E06.55 on Performance of Building Enclosures.
