National Grid’s Energy Solutions Summit and Expo is a must-attend event for customers and vendor partners, focusing on decarbonization through electrification. Tom Iskra, a principal at Salas O’Brien, will discuss Integrated Strategies for Building Decarbonization as part of a panel discussion at 1:45pm with Stet Sanborn, Scott Majeau, and moderator, Michael Blaney.

This workshop will present a practical, cost-effective approach to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, offering strategies that are both feasible and actionable today. The session will begin by assessing the building’s current performance and then discuss systematic methods to tackle the challenge of lowering emissions while minimizing costs. Rather than relying on simple one-for-one replacements, the panelists will explore alternative solutions that allow for GHG reductions while staying within your building’s existing capacity constraints. This session aims to provide insight into achieving meaningful energy and emissions improvements without unnecessary financial burdens.

Thomas Iskra, P.E., LEED AP, MCPPO, brings over 20 years of experience in managing innovative projects that prioritize efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. A Principal with Salas O’Brien, Tom leads the Boston office. Notable project experience includes the renewal of Harvard’s Historic River Houses, with Stone Hall earning LEED Platinum certification, and the decarbonization plans for Tufts University’s Medford/Somerville, Medical/Dental, and Veterinary School campuses. Tom is also guiding Northeastern University’s ongoing Decarbonization and Resilience Plan. He holds a Master of Design Studies in Real Estate from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, a Master’s in Construction Engineering and Management from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Connecticut, Storrs.

Stakeholder engagement and staff training are key, especially with tech that’s complex and still evolving. You need to bring people along, build consensus across teams, and ensure buy-in from finance to maintenance. It’s not just about implementing the solution—it’s about maintaining it through operations so it’s used as intended. Without education and buy-in, the solution can quickly lose its impact.
