Lighting design evolution: Buddy Holly Performing Arts Theatre
Architect’s initial rendering
In the architect’s initial rendering, the main theatre was to be illuminated by a distinctive chandelier. The theatre was very large at 2,200 seats making it a challenge to maintain the artistic vision while providing the needed functionality. The chandelier design has to satisfy multiple criteria: the appropriate illumination for the space, even lighting for the audience, and no obstruction to the stage from control rooms.
Design idea: stars and records
The design of the large scale custom chandelier required considerable modelling and multiple mock-ups. The idea–which leverages LED and DMX technology–evolved through iterations and consists of 320 LED fixtures, which appear to be “stars” and “records” floating in the ceiling.
Final result: a unique design feature loved by audiences
The final design meets the acoustic objective of not adding vibration or unwanted reflections to the space. The lights are also designed to ease accessibiliy and maintenance. Both client and audiences have celebrated the end result.

Salas O’Brien provides theatrical lighting design including power and control distribution, fixtures and equipment packages. We also provide architectural lighting design inside the theatre for full integration.
Daylight analysis
Salas O’Brien can provide computer modeling for daylight analysis on the base building design to suit LEED requirements, and can render the effect of daylight on building interiors during the day at different times of the year.

Salas O’Brien’s approach to lighting control not only guarantees the full compatibility of luminaires and control systems and 100% flicker free illumination but expands the extent of possibilities by maintaining a close relationship with control system manufacturers and OEM providers and always taking advantage of the latest available technologies for the project’s geographical market.
