Principal forensic engineer, Justin Kestner, is presenting on Coordinating and Adjusting Large Catastrophic Claims for Public School Districts. When a major cat event damages a school district, immense pressure quickly develops to mitigate the loss, return the children to school as soon as possible, and resolve the claim. School district administration, school officials, and politicians in turn all face scrutiny from parents and the media. Navigating these parties in addition to the policyholder’s representatives is something that is not taught in school. However, this panel will speak from actual experience as it takes the audience through a fictitious yet realistic claim.

Justin Kestner, P.E., MS, MBA, leads the Haag forensic team for Salas O’Brien. In addition to leading Haag, a Salas O’Brien Company, Justin provides forensic engineering consulting and expert witness services in cases involving roof and building envelope performance/damage, bridges, foundation-related issues, building collapses, storm damage, installation issues, alleged product defects, and more. Justin serves as a Senior Managing Principal at Salas O’Brien.

The actual claim that the fictitious example in this presentation is based upon was very large and high-profile with extensive local media coverage.  The claim was expertly adjusted by my co-presenters and clients, Jim Parris of Zurich and Val Mansfield of McLarens.  I was privileged to work alongside these skilled leaders and to head Haag, a Salas O’Brien Company’s engineering response.  Larry Dillon of our team led our building consulting group’s extensive work.  The claim was resolved remarkably fast given its size and complexity.  The public adjuster for the involved school district has presented on the successful resolution of this claim, demonstrating how all parties came together effectively.
