Confirming wind speed thresholds for roof tile displacement
FLORIDA, USA
Wind Test on Concrete Roof Tiles
Salas O’Brien conducted American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) wind testing on concrete roof tiles for an apartment complex in Florida, addressing concerns about potential wind damage. Our team received exemplar tiles and replicated the installation conditions in our laboratory. Using a wind generator, we tested the tiles’ resistance to wind speeds, documenting the results with video analysis. The tests revealed that winds exceeding 147 mph displaced the tiles, while unfastened tiles were moved at 139 mph. Notably, the testing showed that wind direction had minimal impact on tile performance.
By providing these critical insights, we empowered the client to understand their roofing system’s vulnerabilities, ensuring informed decisions regarding maintenance and enhancing overall building safety and resilience against severe weather events.
