CFS advances sustainability goals at the US Air Force Academy
US AIR FORCE ACADEMY, CO, USA
Wecker Hall CFS Design
After outgrowing their current offices, the Air Force Academy Foundation and Association of Graduates sought to build a new administration building on the Doolittle Hall Campus. This enables staff from these philanthropic organizations to be housed in one location, increasing their ability to pursue their shared mission of supporting the Air Force Academy, serving graduates, and preserving the heritage of the Long Blue Line.
Salas O’Brien provided cold-formed steel (CFS) framing engineering for the building envelope, including backup framing for all the cladding. We designed efficient framing patterns for the large entrance canopies and used creative framing techniques to efficiently infill around various curtain wall support areas. Wecker Hall’s design focuses on sustainability and is pursuing LEED Silver® and Zero Energy certification. CFS’s recyclability, durability, and low carbon footprint made it an effective material choice for this project’s goals. Once certified, Wecker Hall will be the first Zero Energy facility located on a US Air Force installation.
