Transforming former school into award winning municipal center
ALLISTON, ON, CANADA
Town of New Tecumseth Administration Center
Salas O’Brien collaborated with the Town of New Tecumseth on the structural design of their new municipal offices. The project transformed the former Alliston Union Public School in Alliston, Ontario, into a modern municipal administration center. Our team preserved the school’s original structure while integrating state-of-the-art, energy-efficient mechanical and electrical IT systems.
The facility integrates public gathering spaces with municipal areas and features a modern wood and glass design that frames views of the adjacent community plaza and park. We conducted a site visit to evaluate conditions and guided the reconstruction of load-bearing masonry piers. We also reviewed and updated architectural and structural drawings, ensuring compliance with the Ontario Building Code (OBC) for load conditions and maintaining lateral stability in the masonry walls. As a result, the project received the 2024 Ontario Woodworks Award for Excellence in Wood Design for its innovative adaptive reuse approach.
