Optimizing cement material processing for maximum efficiency

Texas Lehigh Slag Grinding Facility
Salas O’Brien provided engineering design services as Owner’s Engineer for the development of Texas Lehigh’s new granulated blast furnace slag grinding and distribution terminal. Phase I of the project involved installing ground slag storage silos and truck/rail loadouts. Phase II includes the installation of a ball mill and ancillaries to support on-site grinding of slag, limestone, and gypsum. These materials are received by ship and transported to the site. Each material is distributed by front-end loader into their respective feed bins, then conveyed to the ball mill at a rate of 140 tons per hour. The ground slag is then collected into a bag filter and pneumatically conveyed to a storage silo before being bulk-loaded and transported by truck or rail. It is also possible to produce blended ground slag/cement products. Our team utilized laser scanning and 3D modeling to overcome existing site constraints that limited equipment, rail layouts, and construction access. Our preliminary designs and capital cost estimates supported the justification of the project, and our team developed the tender documents for the solicitation of the EPC contractor proposal.
