Tech Bioscience Lab Renovation

Salas O’Brien provided comprehensive engineering design services for a multi-phase renovation of bioscience laboratory spaces. Our team completed the work in three phases, starting with an enabling project that relocated the Office of Research Safety from the Tech Institute to Hogan Hall, which created expansion space for Bioscience. In the following phases, we built out the newly created laboratory areas and then renovated the existing bioscience laboratories, so both new and existing spaces offered consistent, upgraded environments. The project achieved LEED v4 ID+C Gold certification, exceeding the University’s Silver standard. We prioritized energy efficiency, enhanced indoor air quality, low-emitting materials, and commissioning within the constraints of an existing historic building. Post-occupancy data confirms improved collaboration, comfort, and overall user satisfaction, establishing the project as a model for future teaching labs at Northwestern.
