Stains on Sculptures Investigation

Salas O’Brien offered forensic engineering and architectural services for a major museum in Michigan, investigating mysterious stains on a marble sculptural installation. We identified that inadequate environmental controls during construction led to seasonal fluctuations in temperature and humidity, causing soluble salt impurities in the marble to leach out and create stains.
