Renovate Science II, Physics Wing

Salas O’Brien led this large-scale modernization effort at Binghamton University for the State University Construction Fund (SUCF), which included full interior renovations, envelope and window upgrades, roof replacement, and MEP/FP system upgrades. The project created flexible laboratories, classrooms, office space, and corridor lounges, all coordinated in BIM (Revit). We carefully phased the renovations to maintain operations in the occupied Chemistry Wing.

The project included heat recovery of lab exhaust through heat pipes, an N+1 lab exhaust system, and two 32,000 CFM custom roof-mounted air handling units. We conducted a CFD analysis to support the design and evaluate the potential impact of exhaust from surrounding buildings on the new air handling units. Other upgrades included a connection to a centralized chilled water system, LED lighting with digital daylight-dimming controls, a new emergency voice/alarm communication system, a 2500A electrical service tied to the campus 12.47 kV distribution, and centralized toilet rooms serving the complex’s three main floors.
