Patient Tower Addition

Salas O’Brien provided comprehensive mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology engineering services for Summa Health’s new Dr. Gary B. and Pamela S. Williams Tower—an eight-story hospital addition serving as the campus’s main entrance. Designed to house advanced surgery suites, a women’s center, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), medical/surgical beds, and clinics, the project demanded innovative, high-performance systems to support critical healthcare operations. Our team delivered a 1,890-ton cooling plant, an 800 HP steam boiler plant, and a robust 3.6 MW emergency power generator plant, supporting reliability and resilience.

Leveraging a construction manager with a guaranteed maximum price (CM GMP) with design-assist project delivery, we optimized coordination and efficiency, incorporating prefabricated patient restroom pods to accelerate construction and maximize value for Summa Health. This project has been awarded the 2019 AIA Akron Design Awards – Honor Award & People’s Choice Award and the 2020 NAIOP Northern Ohio Healthcare Architecture Project of the Year.
