InterContinental San Antonio

Formerly a Wyndham property, the newly renovated Intercontinental Hotel San Antonio has been transformed into a luxurious, first-class destination. Salas O’Brien provided structural engineering design for the challenging renovation, a highlight of which was updating the rooftop amenities to showcase sweeping views of the city and the River Walk and a new kitchen, a new trellis, new cabanas, and repairs to the pool shell.

After careful analysis of the existing structure, our team found extensive damage to the steel framed pool deck. Years of leaks had led to corrosion of the metal deck and supporting steel framing, creating a potential for imminent collapse. Removing and reconstructing the damaged areas proved to be cost-prohibitive, so we devised an innovative design solution using injectable expansive foam beneath and around the pool deck that would encapsulate the corroded steel and support the pool and pool deck above. Our team worked closely with the foam manufacturer to monitor the pressures to ensure the pool shell would remain intact as the pool was filled with water while the foam was simultaneously injected. This unique solution allows hotel guests to once again enjoy the rooftop pool.
