Heidelberg Materials Cement Plant

Salas O’Brien was brought in by the client to provide design engineering for receiving, transporting, and feeding Alternative Low Carbon Fuels (ALCF) at their cement plant. With these new systems, the plant will be able to replace 50% of their fossil fuel usage with sustainable fuels such as Refuse Derived Fuels, Tire Fiber, and Construction and Demolition Refuse Derived Fuel. Where unusable materials such as these often go into a landfill, the cement plant will utilize them to fuel their pyroprocessing line to create clinker. Our team designed the highly efficient system from receipt to injection – A high speed bridge crane transfers and sorts received material into the storage building, where a pipe conveyor feeds them to a screw weighfeeder/dosing system, which in turn puts the fuel into the calciner. We also utilized EvoBuild LLC Bronze concrete in the construction, reducing CO2 emissions by over 30% when compared to conventional concrete. Thanks to our engineering expertise, the client is increasing their efficiency while cutting down on harmful pollution.
