Designing a reliable high-voltage power supply for two data centers on an expedited schedule
CONFIDENTIAL, IN, USA
Data Center Substation
Salas O’Brien designed a new 672 MVA substation to power two new
data centers. The client brought our team onto this project after the
initial contractor defaulted on the schedule. We developed the design
and issued-for-construction documents in fewer than four months to
keep the project on track. Our design included a ring bus with 12 56 MVA
transformers and 2 138 kV transmission line connections. We equipped
each transformer with 34.5 kV switchgear, including two feeders to power
the data centers, providing Nx2 reliability. We also leveraged our industry
relationships to expedite the procurement of switchgear, control buildings,
and relay panels. This approach provided speed-to-market results for the
data center owner & developer despite high-voltage equipment being
in short supply. Our team worked closely with the contractor and utility
coordinators to facilitate collaborative problem-solving, accelerating the
design phase despite the project’s initial delay.
