Confidential Novel Protein Fractionation Process Design
Salas O’Brien completed the concept design for an alcohol-free fractionation and purification process to produce Immunoglobulin, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin, and other fractionated protein products. The client wanted to create a new process that utilizes 2-step precipitation instead of alcohol-based technologies. Our team conducted a feasibility study that defined process material flows, balances, costs, layouts, and facility design, then delivered a proof-of-concept manufacturing process. We played an integral role in developing the process for the production of the bulk protein material and the final filling dosage form of the product. We also conducted a study on the savings of raw materials and energy usage for the proposed project. This proved that the new fractionation process is significantly more efficient, saving the client $759,000 annually in process-related energy and $1.18 million in facility energy usage while decreasing waste and emissions
