Computer Science and Engineering Renovation

Salas O’Brien provided engineering design for a new 2,900-square-foot, state-of-the-art server room within the Computer Science and Engineering building at UCSD. The new server room is a key component of the department’s research infrastructure, expanding capacity for advanced computing and artificial intelligence applications.

The design accommodates both low-density and high-density computing environments. The low-density server room supports approximately 40 racks utilizing in-row cooling units with hot aisle containment, delivering approximately 400 kW of IT load. The high-density environment is designed for future expansion, incorporating rear door heat exchangers (RDHx) and direct-to-chip cooling systems with coolant distribution units (CDUs), supporting up to 800 kW of additional capacity. This project also included conversion of approximately 3,100 square feet of existing server room space into modern computer lab and office tenant improvements.
