Delivering a successful boiler system despite unforeseen scope and timeline changes
MIDWEST, USA
700-Tons Boiler Replacement
Salas O’Brien partnered with a global pharmaceutical manufacturer to engineer the replacement of a 600-ton boiler during a planned outage, while two 300-horsepower (HP) boilers supported the site. During the design phase, both backup boilers failed, leaving the plant to rely solely on the main boiler designated for replacement. This unexpected event led to our team changing the design to fit two new 700-ton boilers into the previously approved configuration. On top of the scope change, increased production requirements at the facility reduced the outage time from 10 days to 3. Our team located a portable 800 HP boiler that we installed over a long weekend to maintain operations during the boiler replacements. We identified all tie-in points, allowing us to test the new boilers and then transition away from the rental boiler without a production outage. The resulting system performed spectacularly, providing a reliable energy source for the facility for years.
