Berkeley Hospital Expansion

Salas O’Brien is providing comprehensive engineering design services for the Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital expansion. The project adds 200,000 square feet to the existing 116,000-square-foot hospital and includes a new 90,000-square-foot medical office building to serve Berkeley County’s growing population. The hospital gains 50 inpatient beds, 21 more emergency department treatment rooms, and space for MRI, CT, and interventional radiology.

To support this increased capacity, our team is engineering a significant upgrade to the hospital’s central energy plant. The design includes adding three 400-ton chillers, three 400-ton cooling towers, a new boiler, and an expanded hydronic distribution system. The renovated areas feature chilled-water air-handling units with adiabatic humidifiers and single-duct hot-water terminal units, delivering efficient environmental control. This expansion supports the hospital’s mission to bring advanced, compassionate care closer to home for Berkeley County residents.
