Bartle Library Renovation

The State University Construction Fund (SUCF) selected Salas O’Brien as the lead professional for the complete renovation of Bartle Library’s third floor and penthouse at Binghamton University. The project involved replacing central MEP systems while maintaining services to an occupied, fully operational library, minimizing disruption to students and staff. We designed an upgraded infrastructure that includes a 1,100-ton chiller plant and four custom 50,000 cfm indoor air handling units carefully designed to fit within existing penthouse constraints. Three 6000 MBH condensing fire-tube boilers serve the complex heating hot water loads, and one
850 MBH condensing fire-tube boiler operates as a summer boiler for operation at low loads.

In addition, our design of new substations, an emergency generator with Computational Fluid Dynamics-informed placement for safety and acoustics, and LED lighting with digital controls and BMS integration have improved reliability, energy efficiency, and user comfort, enabling modern study, collaboration, and digital scholarship spaces.
