Developing specialized exhibit to boost conservation efforts
SALISBURY, MD, USA
Andean Bear Exhibit
In partnership with Ursa International, Salas O’Brien is designing a new Andean Bear exhibit for Salisbury Zoo that aims to replicate Andean bears’ natural habitat from Ecuador’s cloud forests. This immersive environment will feature climbing structures, elevated hammocks, dens, and pools that promote natural behaviors while ensuring safety for the animals, keepers, and visitors. Key elements include three yards for the bears—one specifically for mothers and cubs—alongside a climate-controlled main building for care and medical needs to support conservation efforts.
We designed the exhibit to meet or exceed the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) standards and align with the AZA’s Saving Animals from Extinction (SAFE) program focused on Andean bear conservation. This thoughtfully curated habitat is an educational platform encouraging public engagement with conservation initiatives. By prioritizing animal welfare, functionality, and sustainable practices, the Andean bear habitat at Salisbury Zoo aims to inspire visitors and play a crucial role in global conservation efforts to protect these remarkable creatures.
