Affordable Housing Design

The AC Lewis YMCA has been a fixture in Baton Rouge for nearly 60 years. YMCA leadership decided to replace the facility so that it could continue serving the community for decades while also providing much-needed affordable housing.

Salas O’Brien provided structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering for the new facilities. Phase I of the project included the design of the new 25,000-square-foot YMCA. Phase II included the four-story 100-unit apartment building where over half of the units are reserved for those who are at 80% of the median average income. Our expertise ensured the seamless integration of essential systems throughout the building, optimizing energy efficiency and functionality. The project also required FORTIFIED Gold structural design standards for enhanced storm resiliency which included additional calculations and significant coordination with the contractor and FORTIFIED agency.
