12kV Microgrid Systems
Salas O’Brien provided electrical design and engineering for the multi-campus 12kV microgrid systems. The projects integrated Capstone and Flex Energy microturbines, CellCube battery energy storage, photovoltaic arrays, and diesel generators into a coordinated, high-efficiency network serving multiple buildings. The system enhances resilience, lowers utility costs, and facilitates cogeneration and energy optimization through advanced SEL relay controls and SCADA-based monitoring. It supports seamless operation in both grid-parallel and islanded modes, complying with SCE Rule 21 interconnection requirements.
Campus distribution capacities range from 1.3MW to 2.6MW, connected through a central medium-voltage backbone. Salas O’Brien coordinated directly with the utility on intertie protection, synchronization, and operational settings.
