Emergency Generator Design and Replacement

Salas O’Brien was contracted to complete a full assessment and design, as well as a 20-year plan, for the modernization of the emergency generator system at the West Valley Detention Center (WVDC).

WVDC is a 3,347-bed facility that offers inmate instruction programs, medical, dental, and mental health services. The facility remains operational on a 24-hour basis and therefore requires a highly reliable and modern emergency backup generator system.

During our review it was determined that the chiller plant would have greatly improved reliability if a high efficiency pony chiller was installed. This involved wiring the pony chiller into the new, triple-1000kW backup generator system and completing a comprehensive 20-year ease-of-maintenance plan; overall reduction of site energy costs; and the integration of the generators with the existing thermal energy storage system and chiller plant.
