Case Study

City of San Jose

Edenvale Community Center

Located at the heart of the Silicon Valley region, the City of San Jose is densely populated and diverse, and it places special emphasis on community development and environmental responsibility. The regional leadership demonstrate this community focus through a variety of programs, services, and resources that empower and enrich the area’s residents.

Edenvale Community Center is one of dozens of open recreational facilities throughout the city. Located directly adjacent to Caroline Davis Intermediate School and the Levin branch of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley, the community center functions as a joint use facility with a gymnasium, pool, computer lab, recreation areas, and multipurpose classrooms that accommodate Davis Intermediate’s physical education classes as well as many senior and youth programs and family enrichment classes.

Salas O’Brien provided full design and construction administration services for this innovative center. The project involved complete structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering, as well as design for the building shell and telecommunications systems. Our team also provided Division of the State Architect (DSA) coordination and LEED design documentation for the project.

The project team was faced with multiple environmental and construction-related obstacles during the course of the project, including the discovery of a layer of hardened rock containing asbestos on the build site. Despite all setbacks, the team was able to overcome challenges and exceed project goals. The finished building achieved DSA SB 575 compliance and LEED Gold certification, and in recognition of its exceptional water, waste, and energy efficiency, the building also received the annual Structures Award for Community Impact from the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
