Case Study

Oceanside Unified School District

César Chávez Middle School

Named for one of the state’s most respected non-violent labor activists and leaders, Chávez Middle School is one of four middle schools serving the Oceanside Unified School District in southern California. The school champions respect, integrity, and excellence—values we share and practice at Salas O’Brien—so our team was the perfect choice to complete the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design for the 11 new, steel-framed buildings that make up the middle school campus.

Designed to accommodate up to 1,400 students, the new school comprises 38 classrooms, multiple labs, a library, music rooms, and administrative space. Other buildings on the campus include a gymnasium (including bathrooms, showers, and locker rooms for student use) and a multi-purpose building that houses not only the school’s commercial kitchen and cafeteria, but also a stage that can be used for school events. The site also features an outdoor lunch area adjacent to seven full-size basketball and volleyball courts, two tennis courts, 22 wallball courts, and a baseball diamond.
