Stephen Shanks discusses turning envelope requirements into verified performance
As energy codes place greater emphasis on verified building performance, commissioning teams need practical ways to address envelope requirements early and effectively.

Energy codes today often require verification rather than intent alone, and project teams are facing new challenges in demonstrating that building enclosures perform as designed. These requirements have created new opportunities for coordination between mechanical, electrical, and envelope commissioning teams. On October 8 at 2 p.m. EST, Salas O’Brien vice president of commissioning Stephen Shanks, CxA, CxA+BE, BECxP, will explore how commissioning providers can help projects meet those requirements through better planning, coordination, and field verification.
Stephen’s presentation for the Essential Cx Webinar Series, “Commissioning the Code-Compliant Envelope,” will teach attendees practical strategies for incorporating envelope performance into the commissioning process, from design review and specifications to mockups, field observations, and testing. Case studies will demonstrate how early coordination and targeted testing helped teams identify risks before construction milestones were affected.
Drawing on 40 years of commissioning experience, Stephen will help attendees understand how to translate evolving envelope requirements into actionable strategies. With envelope verification becoming more central to energy-code compliance, the session will help commissioning professionals develop a more coordinated approach to achieving measurable performance outcomes.
