VIDEO: Royal Columbian Hospital begins a new era of care in British Columbia

Expanding access to lifesaving care
Royal Columbian Hospital has been a cornerstone of care in Greater Vancouver since 1972. But with aging infrastructure and rising demand, it needed a major upgrade. The new Jim Pattison Acute Care Tower is part of a redevelopment that will double the hospital’s capacity and strengthen its role as one of Canada’s leading critical care centers.
Working with leading global construction services company EllisDon, Salas O’Brien provided mechanical, electrical, IT, telecom, audiovisual, and security design services for the 10-story tower, which includes space for birthing, critical care, and specialized surgery. Our team focused on solutions that improve air quality, reduce energy use, and support infection control. These upgrades help the hospital safely provide care for its patients.
The key to this project was coordination. Our team worked closely with the builder to minimize disruption to ongoing care, while keeping the project on time and on budget. The result is a state-of-the-art hospital that supports medical staff, welcomes families, and delivers lifesaving care for generations to come. The tower is set to open in early 2026.
