Getting smoke control systems right: Tim Gilbert at CxEnergy 2026
Commissioning expert Tim Gilbert shares a case study on testing and coordinating life safety systems to meet code requirements in high-rise buildings.
Salas O’Brien principal Tim Gilbert, PE, CxA, EMP, LEED AP, will take the stage at 10:30 a.m. CST on April 23 during CxEnergy 2026 in Chicago, Illinois. He’ll join industry professionals to share practical insights on commissioning and life safety systems in complex buildings.
Presenting with Al LaPera of Kimley-Horn, Tim will walk through a high-rise case study focused on smoke control system review, testing, and coordination to meet code compliance. The session highlights the critical role commissioning plays in aligning design, installation, and testing to achieve a successful Certificate of Occupancy.
Drawing on project experience, the presentation will cover key aspects of smoke control and life safety systems, including stair pressurization, fire alarm integration, and coordination with contractors and special inspectors. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how these systems come together in the field and what it takes to make sure they perform as intended.
The session will also explore the peer review process for smoke control design, submittal reviews, and the execution of test and balance and functional performance testing. Through this case study, Tim and his co-presenter will share lessons learned that help teams navigate code requirements, improve coordination, and deliver reliable, compliant systems.
