Chip Israel receives prestigious Louis B. Marks Award from IES
This top honor from the Illuminating Engineering Society recognizes Chip’s exceptional leadership, mentorship, and lasting contributions to the lighting profession.


The Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) honored Chip Israel, FIALD, FIES, LEED-AP, CLP, LC, principal at Salas O’Brien and founder of Lighting Design Alliance (LDA), with the Louis B. Marks Award, recognizing his decades of service to the IES and his enduring commitment to lighting education and the development of emerging professionals. This accolade is presented to a member of the Society “in recognition of exceptional service of a non-technical nature,” and is considered one of the highest honors bestowed by IES.
Chip has earned a reputation as a visionary in lighting design, with award-winning projects spanning healthcare, retail, and entertainment. His work includes transformative designs for Kaiser Permanente, Simon Property Group, Universal Studios, the Venetian, Chimelong, and Hard Rock Hotel/Casino. Beyond his portfolio, he is equally recognized for his dedication to mentorship and education.

A former IES president, Chip has played an influential role in advancing the organization’s mission, serving as an ambassador for lighting design worldwide and advocating for professional growth within the industry.
The Louis B. Marks Award was presented during IES25: The Lighting Conference in Anaheim, California, where Chip was celebrated alongside other leaders in the field. LDA, the firm he founded over 30 years ago, recently joined forces with Salas O’Brien, extending the team’s expertise and leadership to a broader range of clients and markets.
