How updating HVAC systems could save thousands

Power usage effectiveness (PUE) measures a facility’s energy usage. The lower the number, the less energy a facility uses. For facilities with a 100-ton energy load or more—like data centers, mobile switch offices, and distributed antenna systems—decreasing their PUE by even just a percentage could mean saving thousands of dollars in energy costs, not to mention the environmental benefits of reducing their carbon footprint.

The potential savings of having a 1.1 PUE instead of a 1.5 PUE could be hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. Since cooling systems account for roughly 30 percent of consumed energy in a facility, enhancements to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are worth careful consideration.

In this Salas O’Brien white paper, we describe the typical and atypical options of decreasing a facility’s energy usage and the benefits and drawbacks of each.
