Project highlights

Their challenge
The Waldorf Astoria Atlanta Buckhead, formerly the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, merges luxury hotel accommodations, multi-family housing, office space, and restaurants into one 42-story tower. The live-in space comprises 80 condominium units, with the hotel comprising 127 rooms, multiple restaurants, a 24-hour service kitchen, and seven ballrooms as well as a luxury spa, state-of-the-art fitness center, yoga studio, and 60-foot saline water lap pool. The facility design presented various challenges common to buildings of this size and variety. Salas O’Brien was brought in to provide mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection design and commissioning services for the structure, including an underground parking area.
Our solution
The electrical systems our team designed include 16,000 amps of power sourced via four electrical services. Submetering systems service the hotel and each residence, restaurant, and office area—keeping each facility running smoothly and efficiently. The life safety system includes a 750kw generator located in the underground parking deck—securely protected from combustion, exhaust, and fuel spill hazards by special provisions in the systems design.
The results
The finished 616,000-square-foot building provides both guests and tenants with comfortable, excellently designed spaces to live, work, and relax. Salas O’Brien’s work met and exceeded the project’s goals, and we have continued to assist Mandarin with improvement and expansions projects as the hotel has enjoyed success and popularity.
