US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases
New Biocontainment Research Facility
Our client
The US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) is the Army’s main institution and facility for defensive research into countermeasures against biological warfare. Their core mission is to protect the warfighter from biological threats, but they also investigate disease outbreaks and threats to public health. Their research leads to medical solutions that benefit both military personnel and civilians.
Project highlights
The challenge
USAMRIID needed to replace its 40-year-old medical research facility to bring in state-of-the-art, biocontainment laboratory space to support the US Biological Defense Research Program. The facility needed to accommodate biosafety and animal biosafety levels 2-4 labs, administrative offices and operational support facilities.
Our solution
Our team provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection value engineering and design review services. The study provided recommendations to enhance operation, reduce cost, preserve the environment, save energy, maintain safety, and simplify building maintenance and overall design.
The results
As a result of the study, the USAMRIID realized more than $62 million in cost savings for what has become the largest biocontainment research facility in the world.
