Using Expertise to Bring a Critical Lab Space up to BSL-3 Standards
Our client’s 2,500-square-foot Biosafety Level (BSL)-3 clinical pathology testing laboratory was experiencing significant problems with airflow, cracks in the walls, and electrical failures. They were also having difficulty maintaining appropriate room temperature and humidity. They needed to determine the causes and resolve them.
We conducted a comprehensive investigation of the laboratory, including the design and function of the space as well as all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, technology, and fire protection systems. Based on our findings, we developed several options for ameliorative action and selected a recommended route. We provided several alternatives to bring the space up to BSL-3 standards. We prioritized our recommendations based on the owner’s goal for certification, level of disruption, project cost, controllability of systems, and maintenance needs.
