Southeastern Power Cooperative
Rotary Car Dumper Replacement
Salas O’Brien was engaged to supply engineering, design, and procurement of materials and equipment for a replacement railcar coal dump hopper and high capacity belt feeder at one of this client’s electric power generation stations. Our work was a critical portion of a larger project which included replacing the facility’s existing rotary car dumper and ancillary equipment, refurbishing the car dumper shed, and replacing the dumper control cab.
This Southeastern Power Cooperative is one of the largest generation and transmission cooperatives nationwide. The company’s leadership place a high value on integrity and accountability, and they serve over 1.5 million people and businesses.
This project presented several major challenges from a design, supply, and field erection perspective. The client required that the work be completed on a tight schedule, and the engineering design needed to be integrated with plans for material procurement from other project contributors. In addition, many of the field conditions for this project were impossible to assess until after the removal of existing equipment.
Despite these challenges, our team was able to develop an installation plan and sequence in conjunction with the installation contractor and hopper fabricator. This plan formed the basis for the replacement hopper design, and this early collaboration helped ensure that our integrated team developed the most efficient, effective plan.
Our work on this project empowered the client to meet their desired installation completion date, and the installation and integration of the new equipment were completed without undue complications.
