Renovating BSL-2 Labs into BSL-3 Spaces to Ensure Containment
Our client needed a Biosafety Level (BSL) -3 laboratory at their Plum Island Animal Disease Center to sort unknown biological materials containing high-risk pathogenic agents in order to protect staff members and prevent the potential spread of infectious agents. They had space in an existing BSL-2 lab that could be converted.
We modified the existing BSL-2 laboratory to include a new Class III Biological Safety Cabinet system, complete with a Class III IsoGard Model 14 glove box upgraded to meet BSL-3 standards. We also ensured all of the associated mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems met BSL-3 design criteria.
The DHS Plum Island Animal Disease Center renovations allow the Animal Plant Health Inspection Services, Veterinary Services, and Foreign Animal Disease Diagnostics lab to ensure high-risk pathogens are contained appropriately.
