Their challenge

When an increased load from a customer circuit prompted this Ohio utility to conduct a system study, they found that a key 69kV delivery point needed a 140% capacity increase to keep up with demand. Salas O’Brien was brought in to provide engineering design services that would enable this capacity increase.

Our solution

This substation reconfiguration and rebuild included an upgraded 138kV transmission line, new motor operated air-break switches and other high-side equipment, a power transformer upgrade, low-side metering upgrades, and the addition of circuit breakers and circuit switchers to improve reliability. Salas O’Brien completed the electrical, structural, and civil engineering design for the rebuilt station. Project stakeholders decided to use a mobile transformer to ensure that the customer received uninterrupted power supply during the project’s completion. Site expansion for this project was minimal, but there were multiple access issues that created unique civil design challenges—which our team overcame.
