National Park Service
Washington Monument
Our client
The National Park Service manages all national parks, many national monuments, and other conservation and historical properties. The NPS is charged with a dual role of preserving the ecological and historical integrity of the places entrusted to its management, while also making them available and accessible for public use and enjoyment.
Project highlights
The challenge
The Washington Monument, built to honor George Washington, needed a new visitor security screening facility as well as a renovated elevator. In 2019, the project team constructed the new facility and renovated the elevator, but before visitors could regain access to the monument, NPS needed to ensure its safety and function.
Our solution
We provided commissioning of the new screening facility in compliance with all ASHRAE, NIBS, and LEED guidelines and NPS Sustainability Standards. We developed the plan, coordinated with contractors, performed pre-functional inspections, provided testing, adjusting, and balancing oversight, and participated in performance tests.
The results
As a result of our commissioning services, the facility’s geothermal heat pump system, fire alarm systems, and lighting controls systems operated at peak performance, and the building operations team has easy access to relevant manuals.
