NICHD Lab Renovations
Our client
The mission of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), under the oversight of the The National Institutes of Health (NIH), is to promote the health of women in the reproductive process and children. They conduct and support research, clinical trials, and epidemiological studies that explore health processes to advance medical knowledge.
Project highlights
The challenge
While relocating a majority of their institute to various facilities on and off the NIH campus, several NICHD programs moved to Building 49. Multiple laboratory and office spaces needed to be renovated to accommodate NICHD research, including Biosafety Level 1 and 2 laboratories, which require enhanced safety protocols.
Our solution
We provided mechanical, electrical, fire protection, and plumbing engineering to renovate spaces on the first, fifth, and sixth floors. The renovations required retrofits to accommodate new laboratory functions and specialized design to provide primary and secondary containment of potential hazards.
The results
NICHD programs like the Cellular Regulation and Metabolism, Cell Biology and Metabolism, and Pediatric Imaging and Tissue Sciences programs have successfullly transitioned to the Building 49 of the NIH campus with minimal disruption.
