Providing a Solution to Limit BOD Levels in Process Wastewater

When the City of Phoenix adopted new regulations to limit wastewater with high biological oxygen demand (BOD) content, our client struggled to meet those limits and was paying large monthly surcharges.

Our team conducted a conceptual study of the BOD sources throughout the food and beverage facility, and six key areas were identified as major contributors. The study led to a detailed engineering project to design and upgrade automated by-product capture and recovery systems. The systems include a modified package-shredding conveyor and two hygienic tank systems to capture and store the by-product. To improve pH and solids monitoring, the design uses upgraded temperature controls with a frigid water heat exchanger, instrumentation, and an effluent pit pulsed air mixer.

We provided all engineering disciplines required to successfully complete this project, resulting in the client’s ability to meet the new regulatory requirements and save money on fees for exceeding their effluent BOD limit.
