Holtschneider Performance Center
Salas O’Brien performed engineering design for this stunning performance center at the gateway of the Lincoln Park campus in Chicago.
Located in the heart of Chicago, Illinois, DePaul University is a distinguished private university with over 300 undergraduate and graduate programs. With accolades in the Princeton Review, Forbes magazine, and U.S. News & World Report, DePaul particularly excels in business, communication, fine arts, and game design. The school also puts a special emphasis on teaching as a discipline, and with a 15:1 student teacher ratio, the school offers students an excellent standard of academic engagement and rigor.
As the first stage and centerpiece of DePaul University’s new music school complex, the Holtschneider Performance Center was designed to inspire and showcase excellent musical performances. During development of this new space, DePaul engaged Salas O’Brien to meet the project’s engineering design needs.
Salas O’Brien designed the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems for the 185,000-square-foot center, which includes an approximately 500-seat main concert hall and three more intimate recital halls, as well as cutting edge rehearsal spaces, a recording studio, box office, atrium café, and classrooms.
The finished Holtschneider Performance Center serves as the anchor for the new music school complex and as the eastern gateway to the Lincoln Park campus. It opened in November 2018 with an 11-day festival that featured over 50 performances and events from faculty, students, and guest artists.
