Their challenge

When the system undertook a $55 million project to create a cutting-edge maternity center on DeKalb’s North Decatur campus, they needed an electrical engineering partner for the key patient tower. The building’s 18 private Labor-Delivery-Recovery (LDR) suites are located close to surgical suites, and its 10 obstetrical emergency rooms and Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provide extra assurance in case of crises. Each of the LDR suites has a private bath and shower as well as a private waiting alcove for family, and the over 50 postpartum mother-baby rooms feature high-speed internet access, private bathrooms, and window seat couches with room for guests to sleep over. The center also has an auditorium and classrooms where hospital staff host prenatal, postpartum, childbirth, and wellness classes.

Our solution

Salas O’Brien’s electrical design allowed the facility to be served from existing 4160V normal and emergency power distribution systems on campus in conjunction with 4160V to 480V substations located in the basement of the new facility.
